As you stroll through the grocery store, you are bombarded by numerous health claims on food labels and packaging. Some boast of their natural ingredients, while others highlight their high nutrient content. But does this align with what you are looking for? Do these words and phrases actually help you choose among the multitude of options at the grocery store?

Recent consumer data from the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation’s 2016 Food and Health Survey found:

  • More than one-third (35 percent) of Americans state they are interested in benefits related to increased energy
  • Nearly one in three (32 percent) Americans state they are interested in benefits related to cardiovascular health
  • Three in 10 (30 percent) Americans are interested in healthy aging
  • Less than three in 10 (29 percent) Americans are interested in digestive health
