When it comes to healthy, convenient, and nutritious, packaged foods deliver a one-two punch. But it’s hard to win over public perception when they’re in the headlines for something negative. The odds aren’t stacked in their favor when they’re portrayed as being high calories, sugar, and sodium. Despite what you may hear, packaged foods can be a part of a healthful diet. Not all packaged foods are created equal.

The fact is packaged foods include yogurt; milk; frozen and canned fruits, vegetables, and meats; rice; whole grain pasta; and cereal. Fortification also adds vital vitamins and minerals to many foods. The American Society for Nutrition says that a “large percentages of the population would have had inadequate intakes of vitamins A, C, D, E, thiamin, folate, calcium, magnesium, and iron.” So ignore the headlines, and enjoy!
