Superfood Tuesday

Super Tuesday brings a lot of excitement in the political world. It’s not just a Tuesday, it’s a massive-exercise-in-democracy Super Tuesday. “Super” definitely adds flair to a word. It’s not just a man, it’s a faster-than-a-speeding-bullet Superman! And it’s not just your regular food, it’s a make-you-epically-healthy superfood! But are superfoods really super-ior to other foods?

Dr. Jeff Blumberg recently highlighted that “superfood” doesn’t have any kind of scientific meaning. Instead, look for different functional foods. Antioxidants, for example, have a number of potential benefits. The lutein carotenoids in kale, spinach, corn, and eggs, for example, can help maintain healthy vision. Flavonoids in tea, chocolate, and apples can contribute to heart health. Whole grains are another functional food, and they can reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. This Super Tuesday, feel free to soak in the political drama, but throw out fad “superfoods” in favor of some power-packed foods like whole grains and antioxidants!
